Day 9 - Nullarbor Roadhouse to Norseman - 949km

Left the roadhouse early this morning and was quite cool (11 degrees). Came across several dingoes along  the road including a very white looking one and a jet black however it seems the photographer wasn't quick enough to capture the evidence.
Some evidence we did capture however was the spectacular scenery of the cliffs in the Great Australian Bight where the Eyre highway went very close to the edge.

Along with the spectacular coastline is the amazingly flat and open plain and the endless straight stretches of road disappearing into the distance into front.

You know you are in the outback when after riding for 2 hours the GPS still says you have 795km till the next turn!!
Yet more straight flat road....
Finally we reached Border Village at the SA/WA border...
This is one of the holes on the world's longest golf course..The Nullarbor Links...you can play a hole at every stop between Ceduna in SA and Kalgoorlie in WA.
Some photos just to prove we were really there!!

After all the straight roads on the Nullarbor we came to this...Eucla Pass where the road drops down onto the coastal plain....very exciting piece of road as there were two bends in the road within a couple of kays!!!....very tight and twisty after what we were used to..

This could get awkward at times...Royal Flying Doctor Service emergency airstrips are at regular intervals  along the Eyre Highway....not only gotta watch in front and behind but also above!!
Speaking of watching in front and behind...this is getting to be a habit..these cars with pretty flashing lights.. it seems this guy just wanted to welcome us to WA and collect the entry toll..he said that since we were nice people from Qld he would discount the toll by 50% and only charge us $75 and not take any frequent flyer points off us...what a legend!! Felt like asking him what his excuse was for being out in the middle of nowhere...least i am on holidays...not sure why else you would be out here!

Just when you thought the roads couldn't get any straighter look what's next...the longest one..

It just keeps on going and going and going and going...

and going and going and going and going...

eventtually it did come to an end...152.8km by my speedo...at Balladonia and we carried on to Norseman to complete a huge day of 949km and back on schedule as per our itinerary.

  1. The sign said watch out for camels but I think they were lying coz for 949 km plus Kms from yesterday not a camel to be sighted. It did keep me awake along the thousand kms of straight stretches looking for them though. I will find the photo of the dingo I took too....... The cliffs were amazing standing so close to the edge.
