Day 19 - Halls Creek to Kununurra - 392km

Leaving Halls Creek early the trip started off with the usual and by now expected long straight roads. Wasn't long though and the scenery started to change dramatically from what we had been used to for the past week. Even got confronted by a 5km Winding Roads Ahead sign which was really quite exciting after thousands of kms of long straight flat roads.

The scenery changed to the rocky hills and valleys that the Kimberley region is renowned for, however even though we have heaps of photos none of them really do it justice. It is simply amazing countryside to travel through.

Didn't have far to travel today and once in Kununurra we took off in a Cessna 210 with Slingair (part of the Curry Kenny Aviation Group) for a scenic flight over Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles. Some of the photos are a little discoloured from the tinted windows in the plane and don't really show how spectacular the countryside is.

After flying around the Bungle Bungles above, we then passed over the top of the Argyle Diamond Mine.
What a shame by the time we got back to town the diamond shops were shut!

Lake Argyle is enormous, in fact although man made, it is classed as a Inland Sea due to its size and has tidal ebbs.

No hostess services on this flight and can you believe there were six people in this tiny plane.

Sunset photos below are all taken from the foreshore of the lake in front of our accommodation in Kununurra.

Kununurra is actually quite a nice place, a vast improvement on the previous town we stayed in however even here most of the shops don't have glass windows. Instead they have corrugated iron ones and the bottle shops don't open till quite late in the day....gee, I wonder why that is?

Tomorrow we cross the state border into the Northern Territory which is another first for us and head up to Katherine and Darwin where we will probably spend a couple of days before starting the final leg of the trip back home.
