Was another reasonably early start today with the rising sun providing some rather nice views as we headed further north up the West Australian Coast.
Most of the day was relatively straight and flat roads as usual although the countryside north of Carnarvon was considerably greener than what we have been used to for the last few days.
We crossed the Tropic of Capricorn which consisted of just a sign on the side of the road, a little different to the monument on the east coast at Rockhampton.
Now that we were back in the tropics the temperatures started to rise as well. Next couple of photos below show some of the anthills that dot the countryside through here. They are actually quite large with some of them over 2 metres tall.
Of course there is the usual straight road photo, although this one has the added cloud feature!!!
This is apparently called a river up here...not too sure how often it actually has water in it though and can't imagine there are many fish to be caught.
Stopped at this roadhouse for fuel and lunch. The fuel turned out to be the cheap part at 209.9 per litre. Lunch consisted of a toasted ham and cheese sandwich and a soft drink each and came to the grand total of $31.00. Last time I paid that much for a toasted sanga was at a 5 Star Sheraton Hotel in Sydney!!!
This guy pulled in while we were having lunch. At first glance thought it was a Goldwing Trike however closer inspection revealed it was a conventional Goldwing with outrider wheels only so it was still driven by the normal rear wheel in the middle. He had everything including the kitchen sink on the trailer,, even had a pet cage for a small dog which was travelling with them.
Arrived in Karratha/Dampier after riding through 37 degree dry heat for several hours. Below is the roadworkers attempt at humour in some small salt ponds beside the road to Dampier.
This is a tribute to Red Dog, who frequented this area years ago. In fact a movie has recently been released about him which was shot in this area.
Finally arrived in Karratha and look who we bumped into, former colleague Tracy Daley who is now running the Tambrey Tavern in Karratha with her partner Rhett. Had dinner and drinks at their hotel before a relatively early night as we have a long trip tomorrow up to Broome.
